Der Sonntag wurde spontan als freier Tag gestaltet, da es vor allem am Dienstag und Mittwoch schon möglich war, große Teile der inneren Stadtbezirke zu untersuchen. Während zahlreiche Studierende mit Prof. Hannah das National Museum of African American History besuchten, nutzten andere diese Zeit zur Erholung, zum Einkaufen oder für eigenständige Erkundungen.
Ich besuchte den United States Botanical Garden, der an der National Mall in nächster Nähe zum Capitol liegt. Die kompakte, aber überaus sehenswerte und gut gepflegte Anlage erstreckt sich über ein zweigeteiltes Außengelände und mehrere miteinander verbundene Gewächshäuser. Die Geschichte des Nationalen Botanischen Gartens ist dabei direkt mit George Washingtons Idee der Gestaltung der Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika verbunden:
